What actually happens after you contact a solicitor?

If you've never done it, here's the usual path.

Image 1 of 5

If you've never used a solicitor, getting in touch can feel like a big step. Usually it starts with a conversation: what's happened, what you'd like to happen and whether there are any deadlines. Before advising, a firm will normally confirm your identity and check there's no conflict of interest, which is why you may be asked for ID early on. General information, not legal advice.

It usually marks a genuine attempt to settle a dispute, so what's said normally can't be used as evidence against you in court if talks fail. There are exceptions, so take advice before relying on it. General information, not legal advice.

A folder of documents, a passport-style ID card and a handwritten list of questions on a meeting table

What to bring to a first meeting.

Photo ID, the key documents, a timeline of dates and your questions written down.

A first meeting goes further when the important things are in front of you. Writing down dates while you remember them is one of the most useful things you can do. General information, not legal advice.

A will isn't only for later life. If you own property, have children or live with a partner you're not married to, it's worth thinking about now: without a will, an unmarried partner has no legal right to inherit under the standard rules. General information, not legal advice.

Running a law firm

Sound familiar?

  • Fee earners don't have spare hours

Client work comes first, so the firm's social pages are the job nobody has time for.

  • Legal content has to be careful

Posts need to be accurate and general, never advice. You review every word before it goes live.

  • People don't know what to expect

Many people have never instructed a solicitor. A clear explanation makes the first call easier.

A tidy desk with a dated notebook, a few printed emails and a box file, lit by window light

Why keeping records matters.

Emails, receipts, letters and notes made at the time are often the most useful evidence later.

Memories fade and details blur. A short note with the date, what happened and who was there can matter months later. Keep copies of anything you send or sign. General information, not legal advice.

Legal language can be confusing. If there's a word or phrase you'd like explained in plain English, tell us and we may cover it in a future post.

Content worth following

One idea. Five slides. Something worth saving.

The “What actually happens when you instruct a solicitor” carousel in this feed isn't an advert. It's the kind of post people swipe through, save and send to a friend, and it shows you know your stuff before you ever ask for a sale.

A set of house keys on a windowsill with a softly blurred view of a terraced street

Buying a home: the order of things.

Offer accepted, searches and enquiries, mortgage offer, exchange of contracts, then completion.

In England and Wales, exchange of contracts is the point where both sides are legally committed and a completion date is fixed. Before that, either side can still pull out. Completion is when the money moves and you get the keys. General information, not legal advice.

A solicitor reading through a document with a pencil at a desk by a tall window, absorbed in the work

Most of the job is reading.

Checking details, drafting carefully and explaining clearly. Far fewer courtrooms than TV suggests.

A lot of legal work happens quietly: reading contracts line by line, checking dates, drafting letters and making sure nothing's been missed. It's not dramatic, and it's where problems are prevented.

Questions

Will the posts give legal advice?

No. Posts explain general ideas in plain English and say clearly that they're not advice. You check and approve everything before it's posted.

Do you need client information?

No. We never ask for client or matter details, and we don't post about real cases.

Does anything post without my approval?

No. We send you each week's batch to approve. You can ask for one consolidated round of changes first. If approval comes late, publishing can be delayed.

Do I have to send photos?

No. Photos are optional. If you send some, we'll use them. If not, we create posts from what you tell us. On-site photography isn't included.

Which platforms do you post to?

Instagram and Facebook. Each post is formatted to suit both, and counts as one item.

Who owns my accounts?

You do. You keep your accounts and logins. We never ask for your social media passwords.
