An open ledger, a pen and a ceramic coffee cup on a walnut desk in soft morning light

You made a profit. So where's the money?

It's one of the most common surprises in business.

Image 1 of 5

A healthy profit on paper and a worrying bank balance is a common combination for a growing business. Often nothing's wrong, it's timing: if customers pay in 60 days but suppliers want paying in 30, profit and cash tell two different stories. A simple cash-flow forecast helps you see the gap coming. General information, not financial advice.

Revenue is everything you've sold. Profit is what's left once the costs of running the business are paid. A business can grow its sales and still make less money, which is why it pays to watch both.

Where does £1 of sales actually go?

Let's follow it. The figures are illustrative.

Turnover gets the headlines, but it's the number at the bottom that pays for growth, savings and a day off. When you know roughly where each pound goes, it's much easier to decide whether to raise prices, cut a cost or chase a bigger order. The figures here are illustrative, not a benchmark for your business.

An allowable expense reduces the profit you pay tax on. It doesn't make the purchase free: you've still spent the money. General information, not financial advice.

Running a practice

Sound familiar?

  • Deadlines eat the diary

When the busy season arrives, the practice's feed is the first thing to stop.

  • Finance can feel dry online

Numbers make great content when they're explained simply. That takes time to write.

  • Rules change

We keep posts evergreen and avoid quoting rates or thresholds unless you supply and confirm them.

What accountants do beyond tax returns.

Forecasts, cash-flow planning, pricing, funding and a second opinion on big decisions.

The tax return is the part everyone knows about. Much of the useful work happens during the year: spotting trends early, planning for quiet months and checking whether a big decision adds up before you make it.

Content worth following

One idea. Five slides. Something worth saving.

The “Profit doesn't always mean cash in the bank” carousel in this feed isn't an advert. It's the kind of post people swipe through, save and send to a friend, and it shows you know your stuff before you ever ask for a sale.

Receipts sorted into labelled envelopes beside a laptop on a tidy desk

Why bookkeeping matters.

Up-to-date records make year end calmer and show problems while they're still small.

A shoebox of receipts in March is stressful. Ten minutes a week keeping records up to date means fewer surprises, better decisions and a quicker year end.

A simple year-end checklist.

Bank statements, sales and purchase invoices, receipts, loan details, new equipment and stock figures.

Getting these together before your accountant asks saves time and back-and-forth. Requirements vary by business, so check what your own accountant needs.

Questions

Will you post tax rates and deadlines?

Only if you give them to us and confirm they're current. By default we keep posts general, so they stay accurate.

Do you need client details?

No. We never ask for client information, and examples are always illustrative.

Does anything post without my approval?

No. We send you each week's batch to approve. You can ask for one consolidated round of changes first. If approval comes late, publishing can be delayed.

Do I have to send photos?

No. Photos are optional. If you send some, we'll use them. If not, we create posts from what you tell us. On-site photography isn't included.

Which platforms do you post to?
